MISTER Kelly's Philosophy of Education
My philosophical belief about education is that it should be focused, equally, towards both academic content and character building. These should be taught using a variety of different methods to ensure that each student’s needs are met. I believe that the curriculum and standards must be aligned with these skills that a student will need to obtain the many skills that are necessary for one to function properly and positively in society. I also believe the role of the teacher should be that of a mediator.
I believe education should focus on both academic content and character building is because these are two key components in survival in society. Academic content, I believe, is necessary because one must know how to speak, write, problem solve, and must be aware of his history in order to survive in today’s technology-controlled society. But along with this academic content, must come the morals and values that are necessary for one to become a fully functional, positive member of society.
I believe in a pragmatic approach to instruction. The instructor must know a variety of different methods that can be used to meet a variety of different needs for his students. Because there are so many different problems and issues going on in the classroom, the instructor must know, and be willing to use, several different methods to instruct his students. He must be able to reach his visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners all at the same time.
The curriculum must contain a wide variety of subject matter. This will allow students to become well- rounded. Well-roundedness seems to be a trait that most successful individuals have. If the students are becoming well-rounded individuals in school, their chances at being successful and/or being given the opportunity to network with successful individuals becomes greater.
I believe the role of the teacher should be that of a mediator because the students should be active in their learning process. The teacher must be there to support and guide the students with this process. The teacher’s role is to present the students with the material and to guide them along with their learning process.
